| Scottish Borders Council Social Work department – Children and Families Section
Training and development opportunities are provided for all staff and carers according to the needs identified for each role within the Department. Where necessary there is an emphasis on provision of training to enable employees to meet the criteria for registration with the Scottish Social Services Council. The training menu for any individual will also include mandatory courses available through SBC Corporate Resources HR Training and Development. In house training is made available for specific practice issues such as Managing Challenging Behaviour and Permanence Planning. In order to ensure that workers have a common understanding of the core responsibilities and tasks of the section, a 7 day “Effective Practice “Course is offered. This covers confidence in assessment, care planning, translating plans into action and evaluation of outcomes. Short courses are commissioned as required or to meet specific needs. For example, Court Witness Skills Training is presented annually. Workers tend to make extensive use of the training programmes provided by organisations such as STRADA, Women’s Aid etc., selecting topics which are pertinent to their practice responsibilities. External short courses and conferences are used according to practice interests and/or CPD needs. Wherever possible, we are keen to incorporate colleagues from other disciplines in our training events.
